About Me: I was a Général d'Armée (highest ranking) in the French army from 1924-1947. My real name was Philippe, vicomte de Hauteclocque, but I adopted the name Leclerc in World War II. Commanding the Free French forces in French Equatorial Africa, I led (Dec., 1942-Jan., 1943 a spectacular march from Lake Chad to Tripoli, over c.1,500 mi (2,400 km. was born on 22 November 1902 at Belloy-Saint-Léonard in the department of Somme. I was the fifth of six children of Adrien de Hauteclocque, comte de Hauteclocque (1864-1945) and Marie-Thérèse van der Cruisse de Waziers (1870-1956). Philippe was named in honour of an ancestor killed by Croats in 1635.

I achieved fame as the liberator of France.
