Karl Donitz

     My name is Karl Donitz, and I am a german naval commander. I served in the german navy in both world wars and commanded the navy the second  half of WWII.  I even became president for a short period of about 20 days during the war after my friend, a man named Adolf Hitler, passed away. unfortunatly after the war ended i was convicted of war crimes and I spent 10 long years in prison.  

      I was born on september 16, 1891 in Berlin, Germany where my father, Emil donitz, was a engineer. I also had a mother named Anna Beyer and a brother, Friedrich who was older than me. I enlisted in the navy as a sea cadet in 1910 and became an officer in 1913. I served on a cruiser, the SMS Breslau, and then later a submarine during WWI. In 1916 I began working with U-boats. I was captured in 1918 and held as a prisoner of war until 1919 by the british. As you can imagine that was not a fun time at all.

     During WWII I became a rear admiral and later vice admiral  and commander of the submarines. I developed the idea of fighting in wolf packs or as I called it, "rudel" which is a tatic where submarines conducted mass attacks, but what can i say, im brilliant.  I was always very involved with my submarines contacting my boats many times each day.  I later replaced admiral Erich Raeder as commander-in-cheif of the Kriegsmarine (navy), and the Grand Admiral of the naval high command which was quite a honor. After the war ended i was put on trial, and I was charged with waging unrestricted submarine warfare contrary to the Naval Protocol and sentenced to 10 years in prison which in my opinion was not deserved.

     After I was realeased from prison in 1956 i moved to a small village in north western germany where I began to write. I wrote 2 memoirs.

      I did have a family of my own during these wars. My sons Peter who was a watch officer and my other son Klaus who was also in he navy both died in WWII. My daughter, Ursula, was my only child to live and she grew up and got married to an U- boat commander.
