Neville Chamberlain

Neville Chamberlain

About Me: My name is Neville Chamberlain. I was born on March 18, 1869, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, England, in a house called Southbourne. My mother died when I was only six, and my relationship with my father was strained. I grew a strong bond with my siblings who also had difficult relations with my father. Growing up, I never really entered politics, except for running a few campaigns for my bother or father, until 1915 when I became elected for Birmingham City Council. During that year I also married Anne Vere Cole. By 1915 I became Lord Mayor of Birmingham, following in my father's footsteps. I helped immensely in increasing war efforts with creations such as the Birmingham Municipal Bank. In 1916 I met with David Lloyd George and recieved the job as Director of National service but resigned in 1917 because the conflict between me and Lloyd George became so fierce. I despise him.

I gained power and rose in governement, becoming chairman of the Conservative Party (which opposed the Lloyd George Government). Though I did not always agree with Stanley Baldwin, the leader of the Conservatives, I remained his partner, hoping one day to succeed him. I also became Chancellor of Exchequer and gave rather amazing speeches. I spread the idea of coaliton and helped many see it's benefits. I proposed a tax called the National Defence Contribution, which many were opposed to. But it proved quite useful to Britain in its time of war. Soon I even became leader of the Conservatives, though I preffer to call ourselves Unionists.

Ah, wartime... Why can't there just be peace among us? I believed that the anger of Germany came from the Treaty of Versailles so by removing that, they would become peaceful. Hitler agreed to my policy of appeasement and promised peace. But Hitler is a dirty liar, continuing his attacks on us. I try my hardest but there are so many failures. If only we were only against just Germany and didn't have to worry about Japan or Italy. Even my closest friends are voting against me now, wanting me to resign. So I have stepped down from Prime Minister and to Lord President. A book called Guilty Men was released is holding me accountable for all the problems of Britain, calling me to resign from government altogether!

Im beginning to have health problems now, just having an operation on my stomache cancer. Due to my state of health, I am now fomally resigning from my status as Lord President and as Leader of the Conservative Party, but I want to be kept informed on everything going on. I can only hope that this country that I have spent so much time and effort into can survive.
